driving from Key West up to New York City with a rental car
August 2018 – a perfect time for our roadtrip to start. We would be on the road for about 3.5 weeks. Ready to discover the eastcoast of the United States of America. Starting in Miami – down to Key West – and up again to New York City. We wanted to see as much as we could. So we decided to do some detours – one day in Everglades National Park, a couple of days in Key West, we drove the Outer Banks instead the continental routes and we went to Montauk to have a tiny glimpse of the Hamptons.
The whole roadtrip along the eastcoast of the USA was about 4350 km or 2703 mi long.
A hugh distance to cover. We knew that from the start! And with wanting to see as much as we can – we needed to make some serious decisions bevor we even entered the plane.
The first decision was that we weren’t able to stay in serveral places more than one night. So the day was usually filled with a lot of impressions. And when I say a lot – I mean a lot. On some days we were exhausted from everything we have seen that we have fallen into our beds very early in the evening.
The second decision was a crucial one – from the driving experiences I had already made in the US I wanted to skip Interstates as much as I could. So we needed a plan B for the road. Because we both love the water and thought about stopping by a beach to refresh from time to time. We choose to stay near the coast as much as possible. So we decided for the State Road A1A in Florida, HW 17, HW 13 and all the roads along the shore.
The A1A starts in Key West although it’s naming as A1A starts at Miami Beach. Just follow the signs like the one on the right to find your way along the coast of Florida.
All our stops and sleepovers were roughly choosen before we hit the road along the eastcoast of the USA. The first four hotels were booked online from Germany all the others were choosen on the road as we went by.
